Monocrystalline

Monocrystalline solar panels are the most common and most aesthetically pleasing panels on the market. They are high-efficiency and will get you the most value for your money. 

These panels are thin and sit flat against the roof. They don’t add a ton of bulk to the home and have a streamlined look. This is because they only have one layer of silicon crystal. 

The downside to this type of solar panel? The price. These are some of the most expensive solar panels on the market. 

Polycrystalline

Polycrystalline panels are appropriately named, as they are made using an entire vat of silicon crystals. This makes the solar panels have a blue hint, as the silicon crystals fragment when removed from the vat. 

An easy way to compare monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels is to think about dipping something. In the monocrystalline method, the silicon crystal is slowly dipped into a molten melting liquid. When the silicon is pulled out, there is an even layer. 

Polycrystalline panels are made when the silicon crystals are dropped in the molten liquid to melt. But, instead of slowly coating the panel, the entire piece is covered. Then, when removed, it is marbled. 

The biggest advantage with polycrystalline panels is the low cost. But, it’s also less efficient. 

Thin-Film

Thin-film panels are different than both aforementioned ones. Instead of melting silicon crystals, thin-film panels are pieces of glass covered in a photovoltaic substance. 

These panels are light-weight, portable, and look great on your home. The biggest disadvantage is that these panels are low-efficiency.
