How to Get Rid of Clutter in Your Home: 5 Simple Tips

Did you know that 54% of America finds themselves “overwhelmed by clutter,” and more than 78% don’t know what to do about it? This means they keep accumulating without getting rid of anything. It’s akin to shoving everything you own in your closet and claiming it’s out of sight, and out of mind.

But, it’s not really out of mind. Every time you go into your closet, you’re confronted by a mess and clutter. So, how to get rid of clutter in the house and enjoy junk-free living?

The hardest part is getting started, and we’ve got you covered when it comes to beginning junk removal in your home! Read on for our tips for decluttering!

1. Break It Down

The first step to any big problem is to break it down. If it is too overwhelming to consider getting rid of junk in your cluttered house, start with one shelf or drawer.

Some days, you’ll get into a groove and will clear more than you planned. Other days, you’ll just get your bite-size piece done and call it day. Either way, you’ll have made progress and that’s the point!

2. Hire a Dumpster Service

Junk removal is much easier with a little help. Clear your junk one step by hiring a dumpster service. Whether you’re dealing with excessive debris from construction projects, home clutter, or lots of trash, dumpster service can clear your junk in under 24 hours!

You can go about this in two ways. You can either rent a dumpster and keep it in your driveway while you clean your house. As you go, you toss your junk into it to be hauled away on completion.

Or, you can build up your junk pile and hire the service to come to clear it out for you. Either way, you don’t have to worry about disposal or multiple trips to the landfill and recycling center!

3. The Four-Box Method

To simplify the process, get four boxes for four different categories: trash, donate, keep, and move. Go through every item in a room and put it in one of these boxes.

When you’re done, dispose of the trash and donate boxes appropriately, re-locate the items in your move box, and organize the items you’re keeping. Then move on to another room!

4. Give Away One Item Daily

If you got rid of one item every day for a year, you’d clean your house of 365 items. That’s a lot of junk! This is a great way to start when you’re overwhelmed by clutter, as it’s low effort.

Every time you open a drawer and see something you don’t use or don’t like, toss it. Doing this once or twice a day can help you make great strides in cleaning without putting in lots of time.

5. Compensate for New Purchases

A good rule of thumb is that you should throw away one item for every item you buy. For example, if you buy three shirts while shopping, you should get rid of three items in your closet to compensate for the new items.

This allows you to keep your space fresh and not too crowded.

How to Get Rid Of Clutter? Just Get Started

The first step in any difficult process is getting started. This is especially true when learning how to get rid of clutter. Throw out one item, clean one drawer, and repeat it the next day.

Decluttering is simple when you mindfully interact with the items in your home, being honest about what you need and don’t need. You’ll be rewarded with serene peace of mind when you see that dump truck driving away with your junk!
