HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR BEDROOM ACCESSORIES?

As the end of the year draws near, we suddenly start taking note of those things that need to be changed or washed.  When last did you change your pillows? Six years? Eight years? What of your curtains, how long have they been around? Can’t remember?

With the year wrapping up, you should take stock and consider replacing those old bedroom accessories to update your room and complement its beauty. But wait a minute. Does this mean you need to carry out a total revamp of your bedroom? How often should you replace your bed accessories?

1. Mattress

When to change it: After 10 years

Let’s kick off with one of the most important components of your room. Many individuals are less concerned about how long they’ve used their mattress. Provided it’s soft enough to cause you to sleep, it’s ok right?? Even if the coils are bent or broken.

Though some mattresses may not show apparent signs of failure or defect, it makes sense to change them after 10 years. If you consider sticking with such a mattress—probably due to your sheer ignorance—you may end up risking your sleep, comfort and health in the process.

10 years is a very long time to use a mattress you sleep on several times every day.  In fact, the 10-year duration depends on the type of bed. So you may have to change your mattress after 5-6 years.

2. Blankets

When to change them: 15 to 25 years

Your blanket is another important component of your bed. It provides you with warmth during the cold season and can be used to cover your bed.  Since blankets aren’t like your mattress or pillow which are designed to support your weight, you could go years without changing them right? Probably.

Your blanket should last for 15 to 25 years if you maintain it and air it often. Ensure you wash your blanket regularly if you sweat excessively, eat in bed, sleep naked, let your pet sleep on your bed, etc.

When to change them: 1 to 2 years

A mattress isn’t complete without some soft and comfy pillow that can send you to la-la land in a jiffy. Based on experts’ advice, your pillows need to be replaced every year or two.

Oh! Were you expecting something close to 10 years? Definitely not!  Ok, so why do you have to replace your pillows so often?

Your pillows are perfect breeding grounds for dust mites who are drawn to your body oil, dead skin cells, and hair. Aside from changing your pillows every year or two, the National Sleep Foundation also recommends washing them every six months and using a protective cover between the pillow and pillowcase.

That said, how do you know when to get a new pillow? Simple! Place your ears on it and wait for it to speak (just kidding).

Simply fold it in half and see if it remains that way. If it does, you need to get a new pillow. But if it doesn’t, hurray, there is no need to get a new one.
